nights in June - four colours blue - shifts the emphasis of my ongoing conversation
with place/space from how place is inhabited (carelessly) to what that place/space
consists of when stripped down to the barest elements. My conclusion is
that sense is identified as blue, and space/place as a series of ridge lines
that step back through four colours blue. I have a lasting image, dating back to my arruval in Australia in 1972, of the generic Australian house with fake-curtains veiling every window. Here, inside and outside flow through the situated curve of the lace that frames the separation between what I stand on & where I stand. 3 reasons for 'four colours blue'. For 6 days & nights in June it rained & a grey-blue veil blocked out the stepped 'view' that is so much a part of the way European visions of space are constructed. I paint from 3am each morning watching night turn to day, place and space during these hours are veiled with indigo, masking out any detail. And finally, on certain days when the humidity hangs like a heavy curtain across the 'view', green turns to four shades of blue. |
